Collection: Nancy Steele

My paintings often start from an intention based on emotional reactions to words or events. These ideas morph into brush strokes with splashes of various colours and shapes that form figures, objects and places on a canvas. “Gathering for Tea” is a wishful reaction to the twisted realities of the times and a desire for the sensibilities found in the poetry of Maya Angelou.’Two women using the family teacups and saucers are contently sitting on my mother’s settee visiting and conversing. Others are gathering .(see tea cups on the serving tray).

Nancy paints from direct observation using the familiar to set the stage, preferring though, to let the composition find its own balance as people talk, move around and comfortably settle. She is a graduate from NSCAD and Queen’s University with drama, art and teaching qualifications and over the years has taught and created works in metal sculpture, clay, drawing, oils, watercolours and acrylics. Last year she won First Prize at the Square Foot Show. This year it has been an honour for her to be the subject of a short film by Lee Cunningham called “Nancy in Parts” that won the Doc Factory Shorts award at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival. Also, as another wonderful honour, she is featured in the March 2026 edition of Profile Kingston.

I want to thank the many people who have collected my work over the years. Your support and enjoyment of my pieces make continuing “to do art” all the more worthwhile.
